Learn Commands for Viewing and Managing Boot Configuration Data on Windows 7

BCD Editor (Bcdedit.exe) is a command-line utility that lets you view and manage the BCD store. To use BCD Editor:
1. Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Accessories.
2. Right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run As Administrator.
3. Type bcdedit at the command prompt.

Armed with the right set of commands, you can use bcdedit to:

  • Create, import, export, and identify the entire BCD store.
  • Create, delete, and copy individual entries in the BCD store.
  • Set or delete entry option values in the BCD store.
  • Control the boot sequence and the boot manager.
  • Configure and control Emergency Management Services (EMS).

How to Take or Assign Ownership of Files and Folders

The owner of a file or a folder has the right to allow or deny access to that resource. Although members of the Administrators group and other authorized users also have the right to allow or deny access, the owner has the authority to lock out non-administrator users, and then the only way to regain access to the resource is for an administrator or a member of the Restore Operators group to take ownership of it. This makes the file or folder owner important with respect to what permissions are allowed or denied for a given resource.
